EDP DECLARATION - CYPRUS 18/6/2005

EDP believes that the solution to the Cyprus problem should be compatible with the european acquis, based on the UN resolutions and the human rights, in order for it to be just, democratic, workable and viable.  In this respect, the results of the April 2004 referendum, with the overwhelming 76% of Greek-Cypriots rejecting the proposed plan, should be fully respected. EDP is in favour of EU’s closer involvement in the procedures towards the solution to the problem.

This will, inter-alia, ensure that the european principles of abolishing artificial divisions are respected, so that both Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots live together in a united island without any ethnic or other segregation. EDP promises to support and promote a european solution in all the european institutions and, in particular, in the European Parliament.

Regarding Turkey’s accession negotiations, EDP believes that the Turkish occupation in Cyprus should cease and that the Republic of Cyprus, being a member of the EU, should be recognized by Turkey before any negotiations begin.  Turkey should take all necessary actions to implement this in practice, and not just sign the protocol.

Cyprus has a role to play in contributing towards the strengthening of the European institutions and the deepening of democracy within Europe. EDP believes that, regardless of the recent events, procedures towards the ratification of the european constitution in Cyprus should go ahead as planned. Such a development will reinforce Cyprus’ adherence to the european vision.

EDP sends its warmest greetings to the Cyprus people, both Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots, and confirms its continuous willingness to work for a peaceful and democratic future for all the legal inhabitants of Cyprus.
EDP congratulates New Horizons for their initiative to establish the new “European Party” with other political parties and individuals.  It welcomes the new “European Party” as a member of the EDP.
